Why Education Matters

Education separates the haves from the have nots. Watching the news today reminded me of the importance of education and using what we already have to fix the problem. When we educate people we give them choices and options to solve life's most difficult problems in healthy and peaceful ways. In other words we can decrease the amount of legislation if we increase our ability to educate the public in a better way. As a former educator I often had to participate in weekly, monthly, and quarterly professional development trainings and collaborative planning sessions on a pleura of topics throughout the year in order to provide the highest level of service to my community. I have to wonder if that is the case with our leaders.

How can we use education to better educate the public? By teaching the core subject areas like reading, history, science, art, music, and religion we can teach students and their parents the importance of community. We can teach them through real life examples of how people like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Billy Graham, and Cesar Chavez survived during difficult times and used peaceful technique to solve major problems and were successful.

How can we take important subject areas out of schools or minimize the amount of time those subjects are taught and expect to produce functional adults who are community minded?

What problems can education solve or reduce?

  1. War on drugs.

  2. War on crime.

  3. Lack of job opportunities in urban cities.

  4. Unfair or unethical sentencing in the justice system.

  5. Domestic terrorism.

  6. Bullying and intimidation

  7. Racism and sexism

  8. Climate Change

The root of a lot of these problems stems from the lack of education and the lack of knowledge of their historical and cultural heritage and importance to our society. By not educating our public effectively across the board we are creating a society with constant mayhem. Leaving good abiding citizens hiding in their homes in fear of leaving them due to the amount of crime and chaos that is occurring in our major cities. We must do better and we must do what we can to stop the madness that is spreading across our nation. I agree with NYC Captain NO More Violence. No more mass shootings. No more violence against our people.

As Christians we must take a stand against the chaos. We must continue living our lives and face down fear. We must continue speaking out against injustice and continue doing the normal things that we love to do and that bring us joy. We must focus on the things that unite us and not just on what divides us. We must not bow down to intimidation and fear. We must continue to press on and not give up for our sakes but for our children and our grandchildren as well. As Maya Angelou taught me during a speech I attended, civil rights is something that must be fought and earned in every generation it isn't something that is given to you, you must fight for it. As Christians and as Americans we must continue to attend church, sporting events, go to movies, participate in all community events, fight for injustice, learn about our cultural and civic history, and allow the love of Christ to reign all around the world through our life stories.
