Reading/History Link: Read a biography about the life of St. Patrick or watch a video https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=st.+patrick%27s+day+videos . Then discuss the key ideas in the text, "What important details/facts did you learn? Who was St. Patrick? What did he do? Why was this important? Why is the shamrock important to Irish culture?"
Math: Students can make estimations using a jar of skittles that the teacher assembled prior to the activity. "What is estimation? How can we make good estimations? How many skittles do you think are in the jar?" Have students write their estimation on a sticky note. After counting the skittles have the students determine if their estimation was a good estimation or not?
Extension Lesson: Students can sort the skittles by color and count them. This can be a whole group or a small group activity. Kids can made groups and counted them by ones, fives, or tens. Afterwards, the teacher can collect the data from each kid or group. Have the students make a data table and/or bar graph showing the results of the amount of each color answering the question: "How many of each color does a skittle package contain?"
Music Link: Watch an Irish music YouTube video (Irish instrumental music https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=irish+instrumental+music ) and discussed the instruments, music, and the melody that was used. Discuss the question: "Based on the video what did you notice or learn about Irish music or culture?"
Community: Attended an Irish Dance performance at your local library. Then discussed the question: What did you like or find interesting about the performance?
Fitness Link: Have students choreography their own 2-5 minute dance using elements of Irish dancing.
Faith Link: Make a paper chain link/bracelets using alternating dark and light green construction paper. Have your child write an inspirational statement or a prayer/wish on the top one. Then the chain links can be hung around the house for decoration or worn as bracelets. We hung ours on our Christmas tree.
