Cambridge, Maryland: Harriet Tubman

Updated: Mar 25, 2022

I wanted to do a segment just for Harriet, she is the ultimate freedom fighter for me. She rescued over 300 slaves without a vehicle or modern transportation. Her rescue missions saved the lives of her people and gave them a new life and a new hope of achieving their dreams. I love that Harriet Tubman used the North Star to navigate her way to the North using the Underground Railroad 19 times and never lost a passenger.* She is often referred to as "Moses." Being able to take my daughters to see this impressive mural was worth it. I want my children to not only learn about history but be apart of it.

The drive took over an hour and half. We crossed the bay bridge and we past some incredible waterviews and architecture. The sights were spectualar. It was the perfect day for an adventure day. I haven't been this far east for a long time. It felt great to take the plunge and head on over. It was a complete impulse but it was totally worth it. It's hard to imagine that anyone would have the courage and the ability to escape and then return to help so many others. I think Harriet Tubman needs a national holiday to represent her incredible courage. I love learning about history first hand and seeing what the challenges that my people faced and to see the unbelievable strength it took to forge ahead, despite being afraid. The geography and the terrain of the land would have deterred me. To get to Cambridge you have to drive through the country, so that tells me that conditions of the enslaved people had to be grave in order for Harriet to risk so much to head north, for freedom. Today I want to raise a glass to the most incredible female that ever walked this land, Harriet Tubman.

We met a charming couple from Boston who told me about a Harriet Tubman park and museum that showcased a sculpture of Harriet Tubman in the center of the park. I'm looking forward to revisiting Boston to personally see and learn more about Harriet. Harriet had a personal connection to Boston because she would visit friends in the area. I plan to get more historical facts and add/link it at a later time. I throughly enjoy visiting historical sights because I meet so many incredible people who often give me more tourist suggestions and ideas. They also provide so much historical information and personal connections through their stories. I think that people are always better than google. Next time I plan to take some incredible views of the water and get more shots of the street art in Cambridge.

Peace, Love, & Joy,

Esther Kamoche Robinson
