In the Presence of Greatness Series: Nancy Wilson (Nonfiction Narrative)

Updated: Mar 15, 2022

The sky was as black as coal and the stars were dancing in the sky.

My big brother was walking ahead of me as I ran to keep up with him.

We finally arrived at our seats and the audience and the instruments were fully energized

and buzzing with excitement.

My heart beat fast as we waited in great anticipation.

Silence rolled through the great concert hall.

She suddenly appeared on stage dazzling and sparkling all dressed in red.

The instruments came alive and filled the room with whimsical uptempo jazz music

As Nancy Wilson danced and sang,

and made the Christmas season come alive.

Her smooth warm voice wrapped us in a sweet cocoon of chocolate love.

She bobbed and weaved and dipped and tiptoed to the rhythm of the beat as her voice

swirled around the concert hall.

On the way home my heart and soul came alive as I hummed and danced my way through

the neighborhood streets, with my big brother at my side walking in tune to the beat of the

Christmas season.

Authors Notes

This was the first symphony orchestra performance I had ever been to. My brother and I attended Nancy Wilson’s concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestera. I was raised on the west side of Buffalo in the housing projects. Being able to attend a live performance gave me the heart for art and music and the passion to pursue my dreams. This feeling is recaptured every time I am in the audience and I can’t wait to recapture this feeling of excitement time and time again.
