Mini Lessons and Activities. Please use as you like and in whatever order.
Day 1 Focus on Important Details
Introduce the Easter/Resurrection Story using the Bible, library book, or a book in your collection. "Today we are going to learn about....."
Tell the students, "While listening I want to think about important parts in the Resurrection/Easter story.
Read the story aloud and stop at important parts to explain what is happening and why the events are happening. (Only stop about 3 times while reading aloud.) Use the illustrations and/or the words/actions in the story to assist. "This picture/illustration is showing...." "In this part of the story..." "This is important because..."
Day 2 Focus on the Main Idea
Reintroduce the Easter/Resurrection story. "Today we are going to reread...."
While reading/listening I want you to think about what is this story mostly about.....
Read the story aloud and stop at the same 3 parts to ask the students what is this section mostly about. (Can write the ideas down for preschoolers on a sheet of paper, board, or class chart. You can have them use a journal or sticky notes.) It is important to model good writing habits for kids. You can scribe for them if they are unable to do so. "This section is mostly about..."
At the end have the kids explain orally what the main idea is in the text using the information they collected during the reading. They can use the Illustrations to assist them in the retelling. "In the first part is mostly about..." "The middle or second part is mostly about..." The final part is mostly about..."
Extension: They can use the story details collected to write a summary of the story. They can also think of a way they can share the information they learned in a fun way.
Fun Ideas for all ages.
1. Call or Tell a friend/family member what the story was about.
2. Do a fun Resurrection or Easter Activity together. (see possible ideas below)*
3. Draw a picture or make a collage of their favorite part/parts in the story. (Focus on one.)
4. Draw a picture from the three main parts and include labels/sentences. (See graphic organizer below and can make it using blank paper. Fold the paper into three parts and draw horizontal/vertical lines. Have the kids draw a picture from each part and have them retell what is happening using word, labels, or sentences depending on their abilities.
Day 3 Technology Resources
1. Watch a technology link. Choose a technology clip that best supports your educational program. Here is a Youtube list.
2. Can also have them ask and answer questions about what they are learning...What are you wondering about... "I wonder why...."
3. Can have the students retell or act out the important key parts individually or in groups.
