Earth Day Lessons for Families

Earth Day is on April 22nd.


Warm Up Questions:

What is Earth Day? Why is Earth Day important?



Day One Activity:

1. Read the Bible Genesis 1-3 aloud.

3. Create a creation timeline or storyboard together using pictures, words, and/or sentences.

4. Select discussion questions, closing questions, and/or follow up activities from the bottom.



Day Two Activity:

1. Youtube Watch List for Earth Day Videos for Children (Pick one to watch)

2. Select discussion questions, closing questions, and/or follow up activities from the bottom.


Day Three Activity:

Finish and present activities to share aloud with others.



Daily Discussion Questions (Oral or Written)

Should we celebrate Earth Day, why or why not? Why is learning about Earth Day important? What did you learn today?


Closing Questions:

How does learning about the creation story help us better understand how people should help take care of the world today? (Open ended)


Follow Up Activities:

Ask the participants how can we celebrate Earth Day this week?


Possible Ideas:

1. Do a recycle art project, poster, painting, draw a picture, or collage.

2. Write a poem, prayer, or song. Create a skit, dance, or commercial.

3. Make a list of ways to take care of the earth.

4. Go outside: play, plant flowers, paint or decorate a rock, do shadow art, make observations, fly a kite, and/or clean your neighborhood or your street.

Additional Ideas for this week for Story Time:

1.Read aloud an earth day and/or creation book aloud such as Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein or When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner. Discuss the the title and how it is helpful to understanding the text. Cite examples from the text.

2. Create and share your own creation story or write/share a nature poem.

3. Visit the library to find more suggestions or conduct research to do an author's study, write a mini report, or participate in story time.
