9 Things I Learned from my Dad

Updated: Apr 29, 2023

  1. My love of country, classical, and oldies music. I learned to appreciate different styles of music.

  2. My love of people. My father loved art and for him art was everywhere, you just have to pause and look around. I feel the same way. The greatest treasure that we have on earth are the people that we see everyday no matter where we go and our heavenly Father.

  3. My love of family. My father came from a big Kenyan family. He kept in close contact with them through phone calls and letters.

  4. My sense of adventure. My father loved taking walks with us and always wore sandals throughout the year. My father immigrated to the United States in the seventies, got married to an American girl with brown hair and brown skin, and had five children. There were lots of hills and valleys but through it all we made it.

  5. My love of sports especially American football, hockey, tennis, and soccer.

  6. My love of food. My dad made the best Kenyan stew and the best French toast and pancakes. Which he learned from his mother Esther.

  7. My love of learning. My dad loved to learn and so do I.

  8. The importance of working within the system and recognizing your blessings. My immigrant father often spoke about how Americans are blessed. He said, "The poorest person in America is still better off than a lot of people living in the poorest nations around the world." We as Americans are blessed to have so many economic, social, and religious systems in place working together to help care for our citizens which other countries don't have access to on a regular basis.

  9. The importance of receiving proper and timely medical care and mental health care. They are vital to living a long and successful life. Getting routine screenings and asking questions is important in managing your health. It is also important to be aware of your patient rights and HIPPA regulations.
